Scaling School WASH Programs with DLDT

The Junaid Family Foundation (JFF) is proud to highlight our continued partnership with Drink Local Drink Tap (DLDT) through our latest investment in their District-Wide WASH Plan for Schools in Nakitoma Sub-County, Uganda. This effort represents the first comprehensive, sub-county–level approach to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in schools anywhere in the country, which is now transforming daily life for thousands of students.

DLDT, a Cleveland, Ohio-based non-profit, has worked hand-in-hand with communities in central Uganda to ensure children have access not only to safe water, but also to sanitation and hygiene systems that allow them to learn, grow, and thrive with dignity both in school and at home. JFF’s latest investment, along with other committed donors, helped DLDT complete major construction and capacity-building efforts across 12 schools in the Nakasongola District. This effort took 14 careful months of planning, needs assessments, community engagement, and training to ensure the communities being served were getting exactly what they needed.

With JFF’s support, DLDT:

  • Improved safely managed WASH access for 2,344 students and teachers,
  • installed 30 water filters in schools and offices,
  • constructed 13 rainwater harvesting systems,
  • built 7 ventilated improved pit latrines,
  • installed 18 handwashing facilities, and
  • formed 12 gender-balanced WASH committees, each equipped with savings accounts for long-term maintenance.

One school leader shared: “Our children have been saved from that stinking plastic latrine. It was so unbearable and made their life at school very hard.” DLDT continues to be an advocate for sustainable WASH programs in Uganda, helping children stay in school and families thrive. JFF is proud to have supported this project and remains inspired by the commitment of DLDT to communities both near and far!
